We know that it through truly taking care of and nourishing ourselves, that we can most fully share our passion as educators with others and be most effective at what we do.

Who Can Participate?

Our 2010 Spanish for Educators summer program is specifically designed for educators, faculty, staff, administrators, and education students of all disciplines from the U.S., Canada, or other parts of the world, who work or plan to work closely with Spanish-speaking students and parents.

Professional Development

Who dares to teach must never cease to learn.  ~John Cotton Dana

Spanish Immersion Classes

Students will participate in a beginner, intermediate, or advanced Spanish small group Spanish course, held 15-hours a week (3-hours a day, M-F). Classes are small in size (limited to 6 students per level) and all students receive plenty of one-on-one time with the teachers. The emphasis of these classes will be on improving the students’ overall fluency in the areas of speaking, listening, reading, translating and some writing. Our teachers are native Spanish speakers who are caring, professional, well-trained, and experienced.

As part of the course material, students will receive a course workbook and CD, which they can use to develop and refine their oral and auditory fluency.

Spanish classes are held in our beautiful outdoor cool and breezy Palapa classroom overlooking La Manzanilla’s beach and oceanfront.

Spanish for Educators Course

In addition to the regular Spanish fluency classes delivered 3 hours a day, student will receive an extra hour a day of a specialized “Spanish for Educators” course, where they will develop vocabulary, speaking and comprehension skills specific to the educational setting where they work. There will be two course levels offered: Level 1 for beginners and Level 2 for intermediate and advanced students. Teaching Methodology

At La Catalina, we have integrated the latest research and findings on language acquisition, along with a holistic mind/body/emotion approach to learning. Our methodology puts little emphasis on conceptual grammar with speakers who are not  at a fluent level. Instead the emphasis is on familiarization and usage of Spanish. Our approach helps student see and experience first-hand that they can learn Spanish quickly and naturally through right practice and encourages students to take risks with the language and just “blurt it out” initially.

La Manzanilla, Jalisco, Mexico

But more wonderful than the lore of old men and the lore of books is the secret lore of ocean
~ H. P. Lovecraft

La Manzanilla Jalisco MexicoLa Catalina Natural Language School is located in the charming Mexican village of La Manzanilla, in the state of Jalisco. La Manzanilla is a small beach town of just over 1,500 Mexican residents. The village is nestled between gently sloping mountains covered with dense tropical foliage on one side and a beautiful beach with lofty palms on the other. The warm climate, beautiful beaches and friendly Mexican people make La Manzanilla a true tropical paradise! The tight-knit and caring community makes La Manzanilla a safe place for women traveler’s and families. La Manzanilla is approximately three and a half hours south of Puerto Vallarta and one and a half hours north of Manzanillo by car, with the Manzanillo’s airport (ZLO) only 45 minutes away.

Cultural Activities

Culture is the widening of the mind and of the spirit.

~ Nehru, Indian Prime Minister, 1889-1964

In addition to the Spanish classes, there will be hands on cultural classes weekly, including Mexican cooking classes, Latin film nights, a visit to local public schools, opportunities to meet local Mexican teachers, excursions and more!

Language Exchanges with Locals
Participants wishing to practice their Spanish more outside of classes can request a language exchange with a local Mexican. This is a great way to meet the local people and learn more of the common, colloquial language used in Mexico.

Excursions
In addition to Spanish program, we offer local excursions mid-week and weekend excursions, which will provide insight into Mexico’s culture, history, and local ecology, as well as plenty of recreational opportunities.

Local Midweek Excursions:

Guided nature hike (Duration: 2 – 3 hours)

The outdoor adventurer will enjoy this 3-mile round-trip guided hike along a riverbed and under the shady canopy of palms and tropical foliage to our waterholes (with running water during the rainy season – approximately June through October.) Learn about the local flora and fauna along the way.

Visit to San Patricio Melaque (Duration: 3 hours)
Students will travel to a neighboring beach town of San Patricio Melaque, a beachfront town that has been a vacation retreat for generations of Mexicans and more recently by Canadians. San Patricio Melaque contains a town square, beautiful beach, and a number of retail shops. Students will get to tour the town, shop and can enjoy a drink at one of the beachfront restaurants with striking views of the bay.

Visit to Barra de Navidad (Duration: 4 to 6 hours)
Students will travel by bus to the picturesque and popular beach town of Barra de Navidad, located 30 minutes south of La Manzanilla. There they will have a “moving” class with their Spanish teacher while they explore the charming town with cobblestone streets and then take a boat tour of bay. The students will have a chance to shop at a number of the traditional arts and crafts shops and use their Spanish. To complete the trip, the group and their teacher will enjoy a very special authentic Mexican lunch in Barra de Navidad.
