Kids Programs

Program Aim: To teach the Spanish language and Mexican culture to foreign children ages 5 – 12 in a fun and meaningful way!

At Camp Catalina, children participate in an activities-based curriculum, where they learn Spanish through fun, hands-on activities including learning songs, doing traditional Mexican arts & crafts and cooking projects, as well as through a more formal instruction period where they will work on developing their listening, speaking and writing skills in Spanish. Through the structure of our activities-based curriculum, the children will assimilate the Spanish language quickly and naturally as it will be presented in the context of fun activities that they relate to.

We also strive to create a cultural bridge by bringing Mexican children who speak Spanish from the village to participate in camp activities. This allows for friendships to be formed between children from different cultural backgrounds, and helps carry out our mission of providing a Spanish-rich language environment.

Dates of operation: October 1st – May 31st upon request (except Christmas week)

Hours of operation: Monday – Friday, 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. (Classes are held in the afternoons so local Mexican children can attend after their regular public-school day.) For the convenience of the parents, we can schedule their adult Spanish immersion program at the same time as the Spanish children’s camp.)

Ages accepted: 5 -12 years

(If your child is over twelve years old, he or she can attend the adult class at a 20% discount. Currently, we do not offer camps for children under the age of five, but may be able to connect you with a local childcare provider for your toddler.)

Teachers: Camp will be led by native Spanish speakers. Only Spanish will be spoken by the teacher during camp time. Camp Catalina day camp leaders are all trained, experienced teachers, who also have training in our school’s natural teaching methodology.

Cost per child: $150 per child per week-long camp session (10% second child discount). Registration fee of $45 is waived when at least one parent is registering for the adult immersion program.

Minimum number of children to run the program: 2

(If there are not at least two children signed up on a given week, we can still run an individual “camp” experience for your child at a higher cost of $300/week. This program would be run for your child and two other Mexican kids of your child’s age invited from the village.)
